Donetsk.
Why the hell have I come to Donetsk? Well, because I was taught about Donbass at school, and I want to see what it’s like. I also want to see a mining region at work, to see what Charleroi, Liège and other Belgian coal towns looked like 30 years ago, before all the mines were closed or turned to museums.
I expected a dark, dirty, depressing city. I am disappointed. I find a rich, clean, dynamic city.
My guidebook writes that some tourist agencies organise excursions down in the mines, but the usual answer is “no, we don’t” and the best I can get is “how many people in your group?”.
I want to fly to Kyiv on Friday. The Air Ukraine International timetable features an early-afternoon flight that would perfectly connect with my flight to Brussels, but it is not operated. Alternative flights are too early, too late or too expensive. OK, I’ll spend another night on a train.
I walk around the city, trying to find something interesting. Nothing, nichts, rien, nada, nichevo.
Well, this city is depressing, actually.
